The NYT article by Patricia Leigh Brown, with photos Jim Wilson. NadaDada Motel, the art event I co-founded has had over 300 creatives involved so far and was started in June of 2007. It's been quite a job since its inception and I'm proud of all the design and promotional work I've put into it. I curated an exhibition featuring our artists for 2 years in a Las Vegas museum and that's what got the attention of the Times reporter. One's default life competes with one's art life. Investing too much in order to manage our daily responsibilities can result in less than optimal artistic output. How can I get enough quality production time in the studio and keep everything else in my life together?

The delicate balance is further disturbed by the required promotion of the art which consumes even more hours of the day. The fact is, surviving as an artist depends upon so much more than shooting your pictures, painting your canvases, writing your short stories or strumming your guitar. Somehow you gotta' get yourself 'out there'.

In June of 2007 my room at Dada Motel became my exhibit space and my studio; on display was me making art. With plexiglass walls separating the audience from me, I was on exhibit taking photos of visitors and making drawings.

Since then, I've been an Artown display in a glass room that I built on the west bank of the Truckee at the River School and a Halloween Hollow exhibit in Dreamer's coffee shop. In 2008, I served as an Artown exhibit, this time in LaBussola's very public street-side display window. This rendition of my performance was called "Artist-In-LaBussaBox" and consisted of a residency of 120 continual hours making drawings.

For “Artist-In-A-Fishbowl,” my stay was again 120 hours, but in a 10,000 square foot, former bank space at 50 West Liberty Street from Sunday, Dec. 7th, through Friday, Dec. 12th, 2008. This time I "vowed to make not one physical piece of art" meaning that the only 'art' created was me vlogging live for an audience. Most of the material amassed was nonsense and had nothing to do with art.

When done with the online social medium, promotion is called blogging; done with a webcam, it's called vlogging.

My solution to the riddle of how to balance life with art-making was to make them one–a specified period of my life on display became the art itself. The biggest headway was made when I realized the promotion of myself as an artist was enough in itself to attract an audience and I didn't even need to engage in the burden of making art!

My epiphany? An artist will never make a success out of their endeavors by holding on to their fear of exposure. And don't be afraid to look STUPID!

Examples of physical artwork and a few sample recorded episodes can be seen at www.SorgSorg.org. Monks & artists. Well, it's an experiment in progress. Weird how the reception for the wiFi went bad for me here. Well, it's actually better out here in the middle of the room. You watchin' the live updates?

I'm just goin all the time now... why not. Just thinkin' now, in the bathroom, how I could be creative enough to keep video goin at all times if I wanted. Like right now. I've got a digital frame going. These are photos that I took tonight. They're in a slide show on this frame, you know, the kind that just keeps going? And BOTH computers work here.

Big thanks to my wife Amy. Yeah, tis true, we're separated. We're still friends.. she let me use that groovy ass laptop you see dancing arond with me here. It's hers and she's letting me use it. I didn't get my mac credit in time for this. Anyway, my computer's working out here in the middle of the room. And the shots look better out here actually, it's like bein' on the playa.

So.. why'm I full o' shit? This is not monk like r3ally. I mean I'm more like a monkey. Poo-flinging's in order now.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2159601224439969689.post-91723074153593332872008-12-09T09:20:00.003-08:002009-04-26T04:05:11.365-07:00A Few Words About 'Artist In A Fishbowl'First of all, I've decided to officially change the name. The series of these performances is now called "Artist In A Fishbowl"–yeah I can do that.

The idea for the new came to me from my best friend, Marcus Rogers, who I get to talk to once in awhile as he drives 2 hours from Fort Wayne, Indiana to Grand Rapids, Michigan for law school–capitalist heathen.

I am in a fishbowl, especially now that I've got streaming going on here. I call it an experiment in public solitude. The purpose this time around is actually to make "not one physical piece of art". It's all about the blogging this time around.

More blog posts to come.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2159601224439969689.post-33845584238055137802008-11-23T14:47:00.003-08:002009-04-26T04:05:10.650-07:00The Prototractor Series
Find more videos like this on NadaDadaDingDong.com

Prototractor means "primitive pull".Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2159601224439969689.post-34082590395693709592008-09-30T00:58:00.003-07:002009-04-26T04:05:11.333-07:00Renown Hospital Art Commision, 2007Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2159601224439969689.post-68795936891235089982008-09-07T12:03:00.003-07:002009-04-26T04:05:10.538-07:00Beck sings to my lipsyncingUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0
